THE HORLEY PROM

Three certainly wasn't a crowd when The Horley Singers teamed up with The Band of the Surrey Yeomanry and Brass Unlimited for The Horley Prom on Saturday 14th October. A plethora of Surreys musical talent entertained a packed Oakwood school hall with an evening of music and song.  Brass Unlimited and The Band of the Surrey Yeomanry opened the programme with the first public performance of a piece written by Steve Worsley, entitled Merry-Go-Round. Steve, who is a local music teacher and the conductor of Brass Unlimited has recently taken on the role of musical director to The Horley Singers. Under Steve's direction and with Christine Finlayson at the piano, the choir sang a selection of Andrew Lloyd Webber numbers - I Don't Know How To Love Him, Memory, Any Dream Will Do, songs from the movies and That's Entertainment.

The Surrey Yeomanry Band took centre stage as the hall was filled with the strains of Moonlight Serenade, McArthur Park, Lo Here the Gentle Lark, Serenade and Harlem Nocturne, which saw Dave Sumpter swap his conductor's baton for an alto saxophone to play as soloist.

Memories of the 60's and Beatlemania were evoked when The Band of the Surrey Yeomanry partnered The Horley Singers on a trip down Penny Lane with a medley of Beatles classics, such as Eleanor Rigby, Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds, Michelle, When I'm Sixty Four and Yellow Submarine

A selection of British sea songs, which had the audience clapping and tapping their feet to the Sailors Hornpipe played by the Band, brought the programme to its finale. The Band were then joined by Brass Unlimited and The Horley Singers who sang Jerusalem and Land of Hope and Glory with the audience standing to join in this prom favourite.
