Richard Cartmale is a freelance Conductor, Composer and
Voice Teacher based in Surrey, but working throughout
London and the South East.
Whilst studying at Trinity College of Music, where he won
the Ricordi Prize for Orchestral Conducting, he also began
to study singing. With further training, he became an
accomplished professional singer and was a full-time
member of English National Opera for nearly 20 years.
He was still singing both chorus work and solo tenor roles for the company in 2007, when he left to spend more time on composing and conducting.
Since committing himself to composing, he has completed a Cello Concerto, as well as some smaller pieces, and is currently working on an opera - 'The Woodcutter's Daughter', - which he expects to complete in 2012, subject to the demands of his other work! One section of the work was performed at the 2009 Grimeborn Opera Festival, and some of the music can be listened to at his website.
After the very succesful 2011 collaboration of The Horley Singers with the French choir and orchestra at Vimy, celebrating 20 years of the Horley-Vimy twinning, he was invited to compose a work specially for the French orchestra - 'L'Harmonie Vendin Le Vieil'. It is hoped that this can be accomplished for a future event with The Horley Singers.
As well as conducting The Horley Singers since 2008, he is Musical Director for 'The Biz' Theatre School and Production Company, for whom he has conducted fully staged productions, including 'The King and I' and 'Fame - the Musical' ,'Beauty and The Beast' as well as preparing workshop productions for their regular Saturday School. During 2011 he also conducted productions of both 'Kiss Me, Kate' and 'West Side Story'. He has also overseen the musical preparation for a new production of 'Oklahoma!' at Richmond Theatre, as well as taking on the artistic leadership of a new opera company in the Guildford area.
Opera productions, as conductor, include Williamson's 'The Happy Prince', Sullivan's 'The Zoo', and 'Pirates of Penzance' as well as 'Cavalleria Rusticana' at the Fairfield Halls, Croydon. Conducting appearances with professional orchestras include the English National Opera orchestra and the Bulgarian State Opera at Bourgas.
Teaching and coaching work has included Guildford School of Acting, Arts Ed and a number of full-time professional singers - both in musical theatre and opera. His own website is at www.richardcartmale.co.uk
